Passing the torch

In 1982 Ingemar Stenmark, a Swedish ski racer, became the winningest ski racer in history. By the time he retired in 1989, he had 86 World Cup gold medals to his name; This record has stood the test of time for 40 years. Lindsey Vonn (USA) came close to matching his record at 82 wins but no one else has come remotely close in all those years…until now! Mikaela Shiffrin of the USA currently has 85 wins and has just a handful of races left this season to win one more to match Stenmark’s standing or two to beat it. There is no doubt in my mind that she will break the record, whether it be this year or next – she is that good!

I find it amazing that seemingly unattainable achievements are accomplished, putting the world in awe, then someone comes along and beats that record! To get to this level of excellence you need a combination of determination, training, coaching, and physical makeup, but most importantly you need the drive; the belief that you can. As Yoda says, “do or do not, there is no try.”
