The Halloween tradition dates back more than
two thousand years with its roots in Scotland and Ireland. It
stems from a festival called Samhain which translates to “summers end”
marking the end of the harvest season. It is said that large gatherings
with bonfires and perhaps sacrifices were performed to ensure the
safety of the community during the long winter months. Samhain is
considered a “threshold festival” when the boundary between this world
and the Otherworld thinned and spirits could travel more easily into
ours. These spirits could be appeased by food and drink. Over
time, it became a tradition for people to mimic spirits and get dressed
up as such and knock on doors to receive the treats. The tradition
is alive and well today with kids dressing up as modern-day monsters
(or superheroes, rock stars, unicorns, etc) and knocking on doors for
candy.
For the rest of us, what’s a historical event without a party – woop
woop!! So while you are out either trick or treating with your
kids or hanging with friends, your participation in a Halloween event
will bring you and yours safety through the long winter months. I
might go so far as to say that it will bring you luck. So go out
and celebrate and know you are doing right by your community.
P.S. don’t eat too much candy...
