On Tuesday morning of this week, we finally got a decent
rain, actually, we had a thunderstorm. For those of you who have
lived here for a number of years, you will know that we do not commonly
get thunderstorms – rain yes, but not thunder and lightning. Fun
fact: thunder is a sound created by lightning – so if you hear thunder,
lightning is present even if you do not see it. What this means
for us, is that when we get a long-awaited rain, it comes with
lightning and the threat of fire. As a result of Tuesday morning’s
storm, a small fire was started on Whistler Mountain (quickly
extinguished) which demonstrates how vulnerable we are. So as much
as we hope for rain, to dampen and cool our environment, it comes with
the threat of fire; which is what we were hoping to mitigate with the
rain. As the saying goes – be careful of what you wish for. We
have been so very fortunate here in Whistler for many summers; where
yes, we get inundated with smoke, but we have not had an impactful
fire. But as we know, the threat of fire is real and we should all
take the threat seriously. A great resource we have here in BC is Fire
Smart, which has a site I highly recommend you visit if
you have a property and wish to know how best to protect
it.
