Is it important to be popular? I think we would all agree that it’s important to be liked or looked up to, but do we need to be popular? When I think of popularity, I think of high school and all the hoopla around being popular – it just seemed so wrought with effort and ultimately disappointment. In an age of self-reflection and finding one’s personal journey, I hope the idea of being popular as a goal has passed. In my opinion, a handful of good friends is worth a truckload more than being popular with 1000 “friends” on social media. Good friends are those with whom you share your most serious thoughts and your most ridiculous ideas, not memes and shared content. Popularity to me is possibly a temporary state that could lack authenticity, so a search for connection and personal growth is always preferable. If you have a level of popularity, be humble and treat it with respect, as it may not be yours to keep.
