I read recently that the popularity of horror movies is on the rise. I think perhaps some people like to explore fear in a controlled environment, or maybe certain themes are telling stories that they want to explore. Some films seem to take on similar stories – teenagers/young adults getting hunted by a deranged killer, yadda yadda yadda; but some have intriguing themes. I remember Cujo, the rabid St Bernard who stalks a mother and child in a car. There is very little action as most of the movie takes place in the car, but the suspense was intense. Take the Shining or Silence of the Lambs, totally different in theme, but the end result left us trembling, exhilarated, and ultimately spent. Does watching these movies answer unanswered questions? Could this happen? To you? What would you do differently in that situation? Would you be the hero? I am always intrigued by the aftermath of watching a horror film. What stays with you days, weeks, or even years after watching one? To this day, Jaws ruined night swimming for me – even in a freshwater lake.
With Halloween this weekend, the dark and scary will be knocking at your door.
