I realize I am woefully underqualified to speak about Truth and Reconciliation – but I would like to think I am learning. I know we are on the unceded territories of the Lil’wat and Squamish Nations, and I am historically aware of the atrocities of the residential schools and treatment of First Nations people. I feel anger and shame over the actions taken by the founders of our country over the last 100s of years, but I will never be able to fully know the traumatic, emotional, and generational impact colonialism has had on the indigenous people of Canada. I can read about it and listen to the first-hand accounts, but to truly understand, one must live it – I don’t wish that on anyone. So, as an outsider looking in, it is our place to be compassionate and understanding because the experiences themselves are much worse than what can be put on paper. Keep your eyes and ears open and learn, and most importantly, do not forget.
We are fortunate enough to have a First Nations collection at Ruby Tuesday. Silver Eagles is comprised of Nancy Dawson and her nephew Vincent Henson, who currently live on Vancouver Island. Nancy hails from Alert Bay and is part of the Mamaleleqala-qwe-qwa-sot-enox nation, where she learned to carve not only silver but also red and yellow cedar. Her designs today tell the stories of the connection between the animals and people and the gratitude with which the First Nations people co-exist with nature. I am proud to highlight the spectacular designs of this inspiring duo. Her iconic designs are Bear, Eagle, Wolf, Hummingbird, feather, and emotions.
