July 23rd marks the beginning of the
summer Olympic games. Not the 2021 Olympics but the 2020 Olympics
since they were postponed last year due to the pandemic. As with
everything that has happened in the last year and a half, this too has
been fraught with challenges. With the pandemic not fully under
control in Japan, there will be no spectators this time
around. Once again, the world has learned to pivot and reimagine
what has been a formula for decades. Our heroes of the track, the
court, the gymnasium and the pool will perform to silence around them,
no cheering and no close contact of any kind.
All this reminds me of what it has been like for small business owners
through this past year, striving for excellence with no cheering and no
congratulations. I especially want to shout out to our local
jewellery designers who have persevered with their design and
production during these last 18 months. Lazy Maisie Creates, Justine Brooks, Treeline Collective and Mana Jewelry Design are 4 of our
beloved local designers who have jumped hurdles and smacked covid with
a fierce back hand to survive and thrive. So congratulations and a
hearty “well done”!
