Recently I was given a book on meditation and although I
am not a complete stranger to meditation, having had a yoga practice as
part of my life for many years, this has been the first time I have
REALLY meditated. I have found over the last few years that I have
become more distracted and less focused; I spend too much time
scrolling through whatever is available on my phone and as a result,
have become more anxious. I know I am not alone in this. Whether
this be a hangover from Covid-19 or just a snapshot of our current
existence; it is not sustainable.
Meditation is a practice that has been around for centuries and is
essentially a method of training our attention so we can be more aware
– aware of ourselves, the world around us and our place in it. The
beauty of meditation is that you can do it anywhere and any time; there
is no club you need to join, there is no religious affiliation, no
special clothing you need to buy – you just need a comfortable place to
sit and breathe. So just sit and breathe, in…out…in…out. Focus on
the in and out and try to clear your mind of all the noise in your head
– your to-do list, your concerns, your job etc. Acknowledge the
thoughts that creep in (which they will) without giving in to them,
then get back to your breath, in…out…in…out. By concentrating on
the breath, we can let go of distractions that waste energy and as
a result, feel energized. Although it sounds super simple (which
it is) it is not easy; hence the word practice. The recommended
length of time for a meditation practice is 20 minutes, but if you only
have 5, then that will do. It’s the function of the practice that
is important, which ideally would be daily.
(The book I have is called Real
Happiness – the Power of Meditation by Sharon Salzberg.)
Although focusing on your breath is the most accessible form of
meditation (because we do it all day every day) you can also focus on
an object or a sound. At Ruby Tuesday we carry Mediation
rings which have an inner band that spins – by
focusing on spinning the band you can achieve the same
results. For other highlights this week we have our great
selection of Cubic
Zirconia studs in silver and gold as well as our
new corduroy
shackets that are cozy and
comfortable. Lastly, we have our fantastic Nex Grip
winter boots – all leather, waterproof, built-in
ice traction cleat, and rated to -35c. Also, be sure to see our sale
section as there are new items added every
week.
We're open in the Whistler village this week on Sunday - Thursday
between 10 am - 6 pm and on Friday - Saturday between 10 am -
7 pm. If you won't be in town, you can still shop all of our
