Of course the earth isn’t flat – but why is it that some
people think so? There is actually a growing popularity with this
idea in the world – not just in the far-right USA but also in Europe
and yes, here in Canada as well. It was in the 3rd century BC
that astronomers concluded that the earth was in fact a sphere; So why
would we now, 2300 years later, be in a situation where science is
being debunked for these crazy notions? Or perhaps I should say
conspiracy theories. We have all had our fair share of conspiracy
theories thrown at us over the last 3 years (regarding vaccines) and
the last few decades (regarding climate change) so this should come as
no surprise. It seems that when groups disagree with findings that
they can’t (or don’t want to) understand, these fantastical theories
come forth. What’s sad, is that people believe them. I expect
that at the head of all of these groups, there is someone making a lot
of money and the ones who follow are blindly giving it to
them. What I find interesting is that conspiracy theories are
always debunking something – usually science. I suppose if a
conspiracy theory was promoting something, it would be called
advertising (oh so true!).
