This past weekend was the running of the 128th Boston Marathon. Started in 1897, just one year after the revival of the marathon in the 1896 Olympics held in Greece, the Boston Marathon is the longest-running marathon with an annual average of 30,000 participants. Although it was never stated that women could not enter the event, when Bobbi Gibb tried to enter in 1966, she was denied and was told women were “psychologically incapable” of running the distance – she ran it anyway and beat two-thirds of the runners. In 1967 Katherine Switzer registered for the event under her own name (K.V. Switzer). When discovered that a woman was running in the race, the race official repeatedly harassed and attacked her during the race to try and get her to stop – who’s the psychologically incapable one here? In 1972 women were officially allowed in the race and now comprise about 50% of the runners. As a message to our young women – you are good enough, you are strong enough… you are capable!
