Planet vs Plastic

This week we are celebrating Earth Day – an annual event to demonstrate support for environmental protection. This year’s focus is on ending plastic pollution and moving away from oil and gas dependency. It’s fantastic that we have such a day that brings to mind the ways we can improve the health of our planet and ourselves, but it’s good to remember that our attention to these issues needs focus every day, not just one day. Where in our lives can we eliminate plastic use? I feel that packaging is a good place to start (or continue, if already part of your focus) making choices based on the type of packaging. This can be at the grocery store, take-out meals or drinks, online purchases etc. If we change our buying practices, manufacturers will take notice and adapt – power to the people! If we stop using, they will stop making and the world will be a better place.

For my highlights this week, I have chosen brands that put the environment first and use recycled, upcycled, and natural materials to make their products. Nicole of Mana Jewellery Design out of Pemberton, originally began by using offcuts of wood used in the making of guitars and ukeleles and has now branched out to use suitability sourced and harvested bamboo and Cascadian hardwoods. All Birds shoe company uses natural products like merino wool, castor bean, sugar cane, and eucalyptus to edge their way to having a zero-carbon footprint by 2025 (in two years they are already 60% there). Matt & Nat uses non-leather fabrics to create their collection. Currently, their linings are made with 100% recycled water bottles, and the fabric used in their Purity line is made from recycled windshield resin – way to go Matt & Nat! Finally, we have Pyrrha which has multiple certifications for sustainability and uses 100% recycled metals for their products. Of their collection, the Grounding talisman speaks to our deep connection to the earth – it encourages us to stay centered, calm, and balanced.
