Whistler’s Great Outdoors Festival takes place this long weekend from May 18 – 21, 2018!
This year’s festivities include Arts & Culture events, Music performances, Sports activities, and specialized Clinics, among other Village & Valley Trail fun! There’s a ton of family friendly fun for kids and adults of all ages to enjoy, and plenty of things that are absolutely FREE to attend. What are you waiting for? Mark your calendars with your favourite GO Fest events and then get ready to enjoy Whistler’s Great Outdoors! Here’s a run down of what’s happening in and around the Whistler village this long weekend:
1) Arts & Culture
The GO Fest Haven kicks off at the Whistler Olympic Plaza Friday with “How to Pack 101” for Camping & Hiking, followed by “Navigation in the Wilderness”, a First Nations Drum Circle, Essential Oils 101, a Henna Workshop, and Henna Fun all on Saturday. Sunday morning starts with a First Nations Smudging Ceremony, Essential Oils for Summer, and Making Your Own Dreamcatcher. On Monday, you can Discover Nature with the Whistler Museum for FREE!
The Whistler Museum is also hosting the Whistler Mountain Bike Heritage Week to celebrate the trails, talent, and passion that makes mountain biking in Whistler so incredible. There will be an exciting schedule of events that includes a special Retro WORCA Toonie Race on Thursday, the Whistler Museum Speaker Series – Story of Whistler’s Alpine Mt. Bike Trails on Friday, and a film screening of The Moment followed by Q & A session with Brett Tippie on Saturday. You can also participate in Wine About Art on Saturday, or Paint with Isobel at Alta Lake. On Sunday you can enjoy Beers & Bears, Bocce & Brunch or a Digital Photography Workshop. Last but certainly not least, the WFF Adventure Film Series will be showcasing a variety of incredible adventure films at the Maury Young Arts Centre from Friday – Sunday.
Friday night at the GO Fest Village Square Main Stage you won’t want to miss The Philosopher Kings at 7:30 pm!
On Saturday we have two amazing acts – Carmanah at 3 pm and then Current Swell at 7:30 pm. To end the festival music series off on Sunday is none other than Coco Jafro at 3 pm followed by The Funk Hunters at 7:30 pm. Don’t miss these three amazing nights of FREE concerts at the Go Fest Village Square Main Stage!
Grab your yoga mat and GO enjoy some KIND Yoga at Base Camp for FREE all throughout the long weekend!
You can also GO Sailing with the Whistler Sailing Association on Saturday and Sunday, or GO Road Cycling with the Whistler Cycling Club on Saturday for a Group ride. Cyclists (and foodies) may also be interested in The Bici Gusti Gourmet Ride which takes 70 riders along a 70 km route to finish with an exquisite gourmet post ride dinner created with ingredients sourced from within 70 km. This is a unique experience that you won’t want to miss! You may also be inclined to take to the waters and try Stand up Paddle Boarding (SUP) at Lakeside Park or take a gorgeous self-guided River of Golden Dreams Tour! There’s also Tiger Ping Pong at the GO Fest Base Camp and the FREE Whistler Parkrun on Saturday at 9 am!
If music is a passion of yours then you won’t want to miss the FREE Table Tutors – DJ Experience at the Olympic Plaza on Saturday and Sunday where you can learn how to mix music, scratch records, create a live beat, and learn how DJs incorporate all those elements into their sets. On Sunday you can also Dig, Sow, and Grow your own Sunflower with AWARE from 11 am – 4 pm at the Olympic Plaza while learning all about sustainability and the environment.
5) Village & Valley Trail
Friday starts with the annual Pancake Breakfast at the Whistler Public Library from 10 am – noon.
On Saturday, head to Florence Peterson Park from 1-4pm for the GO Green Nature Scavenger Hunt. The Vans Mini Skate Ramp and Riglet Snowboard Park will both be set up on Saturday and Sunday at the Whistler Olympic Plaza. Car enthusiasts won’t want to miss the Vancouver All British Field Meet which will arrive in Creekside Village with up to 100 British cars on display for all to see on Sunday. The Whistler Farmer’s Market will also be kicking off for the season on Sunday at 11 am in the Upper Village!
